How do you get an open concept? Knock out a wall, literally. This 1978 home was transformed with Scandinavian inspired elements of clean lines, warm tones with wood combined with functionality and beauty. New cabinetry with slab doors and drawers including a matching dishwasher panel create a continuous look. The ceiling exhaust fan prevents any obstruction of the cooking space. A custom plate rack with lighting above the window displays the homeowners beloved collection. The desired raised eating bar allows for casual or additional entertainment seating.
To make one cohesive look the same existing living room maple hardwood flooring was installed into the kitchen, family room and foyer. New fir baseboard and crown molding stained to match the new cabinetry adds character. Lots of additional can lights along with some awesome unique fixtures enrich the appearance of the spaces.
Other projects include the family room’s 70’s painted cabinets were replaced with a sleeker matching entertainment cabinet that houses the electronics in the glass doors and floating shelves for personal displays with under lighting. And in the front foyer the existing painted beams were custom wrapped with fir and stained to match all of the other millwork in the house.
This fireplace makeover turned a “yawner” into something to talk about. Inspired by a picture in a magazine, Revive Remodeling took the concept and custom designed and built the fireplace with the unique elements including an off centered built in shelving niche above the mantel with vertical line surprises also mimicked into the mantel. The Nero Satin tile with white veining is a striking contrast against the white walls and clear coated vertical grain fir woodwork. It’s truly an art piece in itself.

Wood Accents
Wood is often incorporated into the design of a space through walls, wood slats, and flooring. Wooden toys, like that of Danish designer Kay Bojesen’s iconic wooden monkey introduced in 1951, can also be placed around rooms as playful accents. Often, designers juxtapose the hard, dense material with rugs or sheepskin textiles to soften the feel of a space. In keeping with the light and bright aesthetic of Scandinavian design, light woods such as beech, ash, and pine are typically used most.
Simplicity and practicality are the two largest principles of Scandinavian design. Walls are commonly left bare and spaces are left relatively sparse to emphasize this principle. Even toys are designed as simple, wooden objects, and tents made from dowels and fabrics are frequently found in Scandinavian playrooms.
Scandinavian decor marries modern design with natural elements.
What’s the difference between modern and contemporary design?
Modern design refers to an era that has passed, while contemporary design is all about the now and the future. The most popular modern design era is the mid-century modern era of the 1950s and 1960s. But Art Deco design of the 1920s or anything from then to the vintage look of the 1970s can also be considered modern.Jun 13, 2022
A fireplace should be cozy, so you might be inclined to stay away from a modern design for fear it’ll look too cold and stark—but the second you lay eyes on the striking fireplaces ahead, you’ll see why those things don’t have to be opposites.
